Can Slowing Down Help You Sleep Better?
Have you ever gone to bed exhausted, only to discover that your body is tired but your mind refuses to switch off?
You close your eyes, but thoughts continue. The day replays in your head. Tomorrow’s responsibilities begin arriving before today has even finished. Your shoulders are tense, your breathing is shallow, and although you desperately want to sleep, your system is still behaving as if it needs to remain alert.

This is where Tai Chi may help.
Tai Chi is often described as meditation in movement. Through slow, controlled movements, natural breathing, balance, relaxation, and focused attention, the practice teaches us something increasingly difficult in modern life: how to slow down consciously.
And research suggests that this ability may have a meaningful impact on the quality of our sleep.
Teaching the Body How to Slow Down
Sleep does not begin the moment we put our head on the pillow.
Our ability to sleep is influenced by what happens during the hours leading up to bedtime. If the body remains physically tense and the mind remains highly stimulated, transitioning into sleep can become difficult.
Tai Chi introduces the opposite experience.
Instead of rushing, we move slowly. Instead of forcing the body, we release unnecessary effort. Instead of allowing attention to jump constantly from one thought to another, we bring it back to breathing, posture, balance, and movement.
Over time, this becomes a form of training in relaxation.
Research has produced encouraging results. A randomized controlled study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society examined 118 adults between 60 and 92 years old. Participants practicing Tai Chi three times per week for 24 weeks showed improvements in sleep quality, duration, efficiency, and sleep disturbances.
The Tai Chi participants reported falling asleep approximately 18 minutes faster and sleeping approximately 48 minutes longer per night compared with participants performing low-impact exercise.
Another large randomized clinical trial, published in JAMA Network Open in 2021, followed 320 adults aged 60 or older experiencing chronic insomnia. Researchers found that Tai Chi improved objectively measured sleep efficiency and reduced the amount of time participants remained awake after falling asleep.
Interestingly, some of these improvements were still detectable during long-term follow-up.
Tai Chi therefore appears to offer something particularly valuable: it does not simply make the body tired. It may help teach the body how to enter a calmer state.
Sleeping Better and Possibly Deeper
Quality sleep is not only about the number of hours we spend in bed.
We can sleep for eight hours and still wake feeling exhausted. What matters is also how efficiently we sleep, how often we wake during the night, and how much restorative sleep we experience.
Tai Chi research is beginning to explore these deeper aspects of sleep.
A randomized controlled trial published in 2026 examined adults aged 65–75 experiencing mild sleep disturbance. Participants practiced standardized 24-form Tai Chi for 60 minutes, five times per week, over 12 weeks.
Researchers did not rely only on questionnaires. They also measured participants’ sleep overnight using polysomnography, which records brain activity and different stages of sleep.
The results were particularly interesting.
The Tai Chi group experienced improvements in sleep onset, sleep efficiency, and overall sleep quality. Researchers also reported a 23.1% increase in the proportion of N3 sleep — commonly known as deep sleep — together with increased delta-wave activity.
Deep sleep plays an important role in physical restoration and recovery.
These findings do not mean that Tai Chi should be considered a cure for every sleep problem. Sleep disorders can have many causes and sometimes require medical assessment and treatment.
However, the research increasingly supports Tai Chi as a gentle, non-pharmacological practice that may contribute to healthier sleep.
Another randomized study involving breast cancer survivors experiencing insomnia compared Tai Chi Chih with cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia. Both interventions produced meaningful improvements, with Tai Chi demonstrating lasting benefits for many participants.
The message emerging from these studies is encouraging:
Learning how to relax while awake may influence how well we rest while asleep.
How to Practice Tai Chi for Better Sleep
You do not necessarily need an hour-long Tai Chi session immediately before bedtime.
For many people, the objective should be to create a gradual transition from the activity of the day toward the stillness of the night.
Try practicing 10–20 minutes of gentle Tai Chi or Qi Gong in the evening.
Move slowly.
Do not focus on performing the movements perfectly.
Allow your shoulders to relax. Release unnecessary tension from your hands and face. Let your breathing become comfortable and natural.
Most importantly, bring your attention into your body.
Feel your feet connecting with the ground.
Notice the transfer of weight from one leg to the other.
Observe your breathing without trying to control it excessively.
If thoughts appear, simply return your attention to the movement.
After practice, avoid immediately returning to emails, social media, work, or stimulating activities whenever possible. Allow the calm created during practice to continue into the rest of your evening.

That lesson extends far beyond the practice itself.
When we learn to slow our movement, calm our breathing, regulate our attention, and release tension during the day, we may create better conditions for the body to perform one of its most natural and essential functions at night:
Rest. Recover. Sleep deeply.
Because sometimes, the path to better sleep does not begin in bed.
